The Road to Mandalay

Our souls must be well and truly saved by now. Temple visiting reached new proportions at Bagan which is a huge plain dotted with thousands of temples, stupas and pagodas built over the last 2000 years. We ignored the rains and hired bicycles so that we could potter round at our own pace. We were able to climb one stupa to get great views over the plain. Our whistle stop tour continued the next day with another long bus journey – this time to Mandalay. Mandalay is hot and humid, but at least it stopped raining. The palace was bombed during WW2, but the fort walls remain. We also stopped by a couple more temples and visited Amarapura to see the 200 year old rickety wooden bridge. We are now totally stupa-d out. Our spirits were only revived with the discovery of the City Café and our first roast dinner for 3 months. We also had to decide where to go as neither of us wanted to back to Bankok. Instead we have booked flights to Kunming in China.
